Lake Titicaca 2 Days 3 Nights in Puno (LAKT2/3)
|
Description
Lake Titicaca is undeniably an impressive sight. A National Reserve since 1978, it boasts over sixty varieties of birds, fourteen species of native fish and eighteen types of amphibians. At 3820m (12,530ft), it is the highest navigable lake in the world. At over 170km (105mi) long, it is also the largest lake in South America.
Its’ altitude means the air is unusually clear and the azure waters particularly striking. Interesting boat trips to outlying islands can be made from Puno, the major port on the lake. The area is also known for its folk dances and huge herds of alpacas and llamas.
Curious Inca-built Chullpa burial tombs circle the lake and the man-made Uros Floating Islands are fascinating. These islands have been inhabited for centuries since their construction by retreating Uros Indians. More powerful and self-determined are the communities who live on the islands of Taquile and Amantani. These islands are often described as the closest one can get to heaven by the few travelers who make it out this far into the lake. There are in fact more than seventy islands in the lake, the largest and most sacred being the Island of the Sun (Isla Del Sol) which is on the Bolivian side of the Lake.

Itinerary
Day One:
You will take an overnight bus from Cusco to Puno, departing from Cusco at 10pm and arriving to Puno early the next morning.
Day Two:
On arrival in Puno you will be picked up from the bus station and taken to the office of our partner travel agency. You will have a bit of free time before the tour so you might like to leave your bags here and go for breakfast.
Your tour will begin from the docks at 9am. First you will go to Uros, famous floating islands where totora reeds are harvested and used to make many different things. You will then continue to Amantani Island - one of the most beautiful islands in the region. The inhabitants of this island produce wonderful garments from local natural materials such as hats, ponchos and blouses.
You will stay overnight on Amantani with a local family in their traditional house in your own private room. Your evening meal will be delicious typical Peruvian food. It’s recommended to bring some snacks with you, just in case!
Day Three:
You will travel by boat to Taquile Island. This is also a beautiful island with a lot of impressive views and amazing crafts. Lunch will be at a restaurant. You will return to Puno in the afternoon. In the evening you will take the bus back to Cusco, arriving in Cusco at around 6am the following day.
