Uchuy Machu Picchu (UCMA)
|
Description
This is a wonderful trip if you like hiking, being in the middle of nowhere and being surrounded by nature! We see evidence of the rich culture left behind by the Incas in the ruins and villages that we visit along the way. Despite this, surprisingly few tourists do this hike.
This trek visits the ruins of Uchuy Q’osqo (small Cusco), situated in the Sacred Valley near to Urubamba. It is known as small Cusco because it is said to mimic the exact shape of Cusco but on a much smaller scale. From the ruins are spectacular views over the mountain range Cordillera de Vilcanota. It is a fascinating site where the Inca chief Viracocha lived. The mummy that was found here is said to be of him. The ruins are part stone and part adobe; some of the houses are ‘post-Inca’, but in Inca-style, and there is a Spanish-style reservoir.
We also visit the world famous lost city of the Incas – Machu Picchu. These ruins are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. This small but extraordinary city perched atop a mountain at 2,430m is invisible from below and completely self-contained - it is surrounded by agricultural terraces sufficient to feed the population, and watered by natural springs. Most interestingly, it is clear that Machu Picchu was no ordinary Incan city – its layout and architecture suggests that it was utilized as a secret and exclusive ceremonial settlement rather than a population centre.

Sacsyhuaman – Uchuy Q’osqo – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu
Day One:
You will be picked up 6.30am from your accommodation and transported to Sacsayhuaman just above Cusco where we begin our hike. We take the old Inca trail that runs between Sacsayhuamán and Uchuy Qosqo in the Sacred Valley. It is thought that this path was used to transport stones for the construction of Sacsayhuamán. Along the Trail we will pass the lagoon of Llaulliqocha (4000 meters alt.), the village of Pumamarka, and we‘ll see parts of the famous Inca Trail from time to time and also the snowy peak “Veronica”. We arrive at Uchuy Q’osqo, have lunch, and have a guided tour of the ruins. From here we walk down into the Sacred Valley to the village of Lamay, where we meet our transportation to go to Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo we will have dinner and then take the train to Aguas Calientes, where we stay the night in a hostel.
Day Two:
After an early breakfast we meet our guide and catch a bus up to Machu Picchu. The guided tour in the ruins lasts about two hours and then you will have free time to explore the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu by yourself. After this visit we return to the village of Aguas Calientes for lunch and finally take the train back to Cusco.
